World Cup 2018: Recapping The Final Four

We’re almost at the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup as we are now down to our final four teams:

1998 champions France, Belgium who have impressed fans around the world, Croatia who went from underdogs to now being one step closer to becoming champions, and 1966 winners England.

This tournament has been nothing short of surprises, and with the semi-finals coming up it’s hard to tell which teams will make it to the finals as all four are deserving of becoming world champions.

Here is a recap of how each team reached the semi-finals:

France were the winners of group C by winning their games against Australia and Peru, and then tying against Denmark. In the Round of 16, France defeated fan-favorites Argentina 4-3 in a highly competitive match and defeated Uruguay 2-0 in the quarterfinals. This is France’s 6th semi-finals appearance out of the 15 times they have been in the World Cup.

Belgium were the winners of group G, sweeping three victories over Panama, Tunisia, and semi-finalist England. Belgium narrowly defeated Japan 3-2 in the Round of 16 and knocked out favorites Brazil in the quarterfinals 2-1. This is Belgium’s second semi-finals appearance in the thirteen times they have participated in the World Cup.

Croatia topped Group D by sweeping three victories over Nigeria, Argentina, and Iceland. Both of Croatia’s matches in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals ended in penalty kicks. They defeated Denmark in the Round of 16 3-2 in penalties and eliminated host Russia 4-3 in penalties. This is Croatia’s second semi-finals appearance in the five times that they have participated in the World Cup.

England is the only semi-final team not to win their group, having placed second behind Belgium but managed two wins over Panama and Tunisia. In the Round of 16, England defeated Colombia in penalties 4-3 and beat Sweden 2-0 in the quarterfinals. This is England’s third semi-finals appearance in the 15 times that they have participated in the World Cup.

Croatia and England will face off in the semi-finals on July 11th.
