New Orleans Saints: Three Bold Predictions for 2018
The New Orleans Saints were a proper tackle away from playing the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC Championship. The majority of that team returns for the 2018 season. Drew Brees is still one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. As long as he is under center and Sean Payton is calling plays, the Saints should be contenders. I was a little disappointed in the way that the New Orleans Saints attacked the offseason. For a team with such a small window for winning another championship, I thought they would be more aggressive in acquiring players that can help them win this year. In saying all of that, let us make three bold predictions for the New Orleans Saints in 2018.
- MICHAEL THOMAS WILL LEAD THE NFL IN RECEPTIONS AND YARDS
Michael Thomas was a 2nd-round pick from Ohio State in the 2016 draft. He took to this offense like a duck to water. Thomas caught 92 balls as a rookie for 1,137 yards. He improved those numbers in 2017 with 104 receptions and 1,245 yards. I believe in 2018 that Michael Thomas will be the undisputed star of the offense. I believe he can catch 120 passes for 1,500 yards. Thomas is poised to become one of the wide receivers in the NFL.
- ROOKIE EDGE RUSHER MARCUS DAVENPORT WILL RECORD LESS THAN FIVE SACKS
I made it no secret that I didn’t like the New Orleans trade to acquire Marcus Davenport. Davenport is a raw pass rusher from UTSA. I just don’t think Davenport is ready to contribute at the level the Saints need. Giving up a 2019 first-round pick made the deal even worse. Davenport has already had surgery this offseason (albeit very minor). I think injuries, lack of technique, and other factors will keep Marcus Davenport from producing anywhere near the level he was drafted to produce at.
- THE SAINTS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS BUT NOT WIN A PLAYOFF GAME
I think the Saints are a 10-6/11-5 type of team that could very well win the NFC South. I just think they will be a team that is beat up and tired. A team like the Green Bay Packers or someone like them that can handle the Superdome crowd would have a great chance of knocking them out.
