Justify Kentucky Derby Winner and next Triple Crown Winner
With Justify winning the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. A lot of people including myself were very wary of him because he had only raced 3 times and never as a 2-year-old. By winning the Kentucky Derby he became the first horse in 136 years to win the Kentucky Derby without ever racing as a 2-year-old. What is going to be the biggest obstacle in front of him will be the true test of Champions which is the Belmont Stakes. Now lets recap how good of a race Justify ran in the Derby.[ESPOAds]
All throughout the day Bob Baffert the horse’s trainer, and now five-time Kentucky Derby Champ had said the most important thing for Justify was to break well and get to the lead. Well, Justify did just that as he had nearly a perfect break from the starting gate. Justify was given a 103 Beyer Speed rating for his 2:04.20 final time over a mile and a quarter.
Early on the pace was frantic as they went 1/4 mile in 22.24 and a half in 45.77 seconds. Which in the slop is pretty fantastic. Early on Justify had to deal with Promises Fulfilled. However, he would fade around the far turn and would end up 15th. He then had to take on a challenge by Bolt D’Oro. Nevertheless, he would also fade away due to the torrid pace. The next challenger up was Good Magic who ranged up on the outside of Justify but was never able to catch him. By the last furlong pole, Justify was ahead by 2 1/2 and wouldn’t relinquish the lead.
So whats next for the Kentucky Derby Winner? A trip to Pimlico for the 2nd jewel of the Triple Crown the Preakness Stakes. In my opinion, since he is a front-running horse he will absolutely smash the Preakness. Thus, he will set up a dramatic finish in the Belmont Stakes. This horse is the real deal and now has the eyes of America on him. We are looking at our 2nd Triple Crown winner in 3 years, after going 37 years without one. Heres to Justify, America will be watching and rooting for you.[EspoTwitter]
