WWE: Wrestlemania 34 did not live up to the Hype
For wrestling fans, WrestleMania is the Super Bowl. This is the largest pay per view that the WWE has every year. The most fans and most viewed. The matches that are held at WrestleMania are hyped for many months. Most of the superstars wait for their shot and match to make a name for themselves. This is year WrestleMania 34 returned to New Orleans where just two years earlier it was epic.
The matches in this year WrestleMania didn’t live up to the standards that the WWE normally sets. Most of the pay per views the main titles change hands. This was no different. The better of the championship matches, in my opinion, was the match between Charlotte Flair vs Asuka, Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax and AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura. All three of these matches belong at WrestleMania 34.
The match between Charlotte Flair and Asuka was in the works since Asuka won the first ever women’s Royal Rumble. Charlotte held the title. She was putting her title on the line against Asuka’s undefeated streak. The match went back and forth with both stars dominating at different points throughout the match. Charlotte would take advantage late in the match and hit her signature submission move the figure 8 to end the streak. Charlotte after the match was emotional but her and Asuka showed respect for each other and embraced. Asuka said, “I wasn’t ready for Charlotte but Charlotte was ready for Asuka”.
The other women’s championship placed Alexa Bliss against Nia Jax. These two, at one time, were best of friends. Nia Jax was basically Alexa’s bodyguard. She made sure that Alexa hung on to her title. Then right before WrestleMania, Bliss made some mean comments with her new gal pal Mickie James. What Bliss didn’t know is that the microphone was on and Jax heard everything. Jax went crazy and stormed into the locker room after Bliss.
Bliss came out with James at the start of the match and Jax came alone. Jax came out with a game plan. She took out James as soon as the bell rang. Bliss is undersized compared to Jax, so she began chopping her legs out from underneath her. She focused on her knees to bring her down. Somehow Jax survived the on slot and used her power and size to neutralize Bliss. In the end, Jax got Bliss on the ropes and used her finisher to take the title. Jax was very emotional after the match. She raised her title high above her head.
The last good championship match featured AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE championship. These two were at each other’s throats for weeks prior to WrestleMania 34. Nakamura won this opportunity when he won the Royal Rumble. Nakamura came out of the start of the match playing mind games. Both of these superstars have a famous body part they use. For Styles it his forearm and with Nakamura, it’s his legs.
The match went back and forth. They would both use their submission moves, however, both would find ways to get out of them. With Styles, he always has a move that he pulls out that fans don’t know he is going to use. The move that he used to retain his championship is known as the Styles Clash. After the match, it looks as if the two were showing respect to each other. Nonetheless, Nakamura took it too far and hit Styles with a low blow.
There were five other championship matches that seemed to be either one-sided or very boring. These matches were a triple threat for the Intercontinental Title which featured Seth Rollins vs The Miz vs Finn Balor. This match was not as entertaining as it could have been. The Miz who was the current champion did not play a major role in the match into the end. Rollins used his intelligence to other three superstars which he used his finisher the curb stomp to win the title.
The next match was for the United States Championship which was a Fatal Four Way. It was between Bobby Roode vs Rusev vs Jinder Mahal vs the current champ Randy Orton. Rusev came out and showed his dominance right from the beginning. Orton used his signature move the RKO on the other 3. Roode broke up Orton’s cover attempt which gave Mahal a chance to hit his finisher called the collist and then he pinned Orton to win the title.
The Smackdown Tag Team Championship features a triple threat. The match featured The Usos vs The New Day vs The Bludgeon Brothers. The Usos and the New Day have been one of the best tag teams rivalries in a while. Just a few weeks before WrestleMania 34 the Bludgeon Brothers attack both of the teams. The Bludgeon Brothers used their size and strength to dominate the match from the start and they would go on to win the tag team titles.
The WWE Raw Tag Team titles featured The Bar which is Sheamus and Cesaro. They were to take on the Monster Among Men Braun Stroman and his partner. The start of the match Stroman came out alone with no partner. Stroman would then go into the crowd and find a little boy named Nicholas. The idea is that Stroman would take on The Bar by himself and let Nicholas watch from the ring. He even tagged Nicholas in then immediately tag himself back in and power slammed Cesaro to win the tag team titles. The end featured Stroman and Nicholas walking up the ramp with belts around their shoulders. Creating a WrestleMania 34 moment for the unorthodox duo.
The last match of WrestleMania 34 was between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. These two meet just three years earlier. There was no winner in that match because Seth Rollins cashed in Money in the Bank briefcase and stole the title from both of them. Prior to the match Reigns stated time and time again he was upset that Lesnar was on a light schedule that many superstars don’t have the opportunity to do. There were also rumors that Lesnar was returning to the UFC. Reigns and Lesnar both used their moves to try to conquer each other. Reigns at one moment speared Lesnar through the announce table. This wasn’t enough for Reigns to obtain a victory. Lesnar had to use 7 F5’s to finally put away a bloody Reigns and retain his title.
There were three non-title matches that WWE scheduled at WrestleMania 34. These matches were John Cena vs the Undertaker, Rhonda Rousey and Kurt Angle vs Triple HHH and Stephanie McMahon, Daniel Bryant and Shane McMahon vs Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. In my opinion, two of the matches where exciting and one wasn’t.
The one unexciting one was John Cena vs The Undertaker. Cena had been sitting ringside most of the night and then all of sudden he was gone. He came to the ring and excepted to see the Undertaker but he didn’t show up instead a superstar named Alias appeared. Alias then proceed to call the fans losers in which Cena responded with Attitude Adjustment. Cena would start to walk up the ramp and then the Undertaker’s music. Cena then backups into the ring and looks like he was scared to death. The Undertaker climbs into the ring and Cena does not know what hit him and before he knows it Taker hits the Tombstone Pile Driver to win the match.
Rhonda Rousey was making her WWE debut and it was huge. She came out in Rowdy Pipers gear. She was to team with Raw General Manager Kurt Angle. Angle told her that when Rousey signed with the WWE to watch out how Stephanie and HHH could manipulate her. She and Stephanie went back and forth. At the start of the match, HHH warns the ref who is the people who sign his paycheck. Steph used mind games against Rousey by slapping her without the ref seeing her.
At one time during the match, Rousey would challenge HHH and the ref was against it. However, HHH waved him off and she came after him and held her own without any issues. Angle would get HHH out of the ring allowing Rousey and McMahon to square off. Rousey would get McMahon into the position to put her in the armbar. She was able to apply the armbar and Steph tapped out. Rousey’s first match was a huge success. This was the best match of the night.
The biggest SmackDown match was two officers against two current superstars. This match stemmed from Daniel Bryan giving Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens chance after chance. Shane had warned Bryant over and over that Zayn and Owens would screw him. They did just that. They each went on separate attacks on each Bryant and McMahon. As the match began Zayn and Owens took out Bryan to make it easier on them.
Shane has just gotten back from hernia surgery so Zayn and Owens both went after his midsection to make almost near impossible to stand up and face them. Somehow Shane mustered enough strength to pull off his signature jump across the ring. This gave time for Bryan to regain his strength and get tagged in. Now it wasn’t all easy for him Owens and Zayn also would punish him as well. In the end, Bryan was able to apply his famous S Lock submission move on Zayn to win. With the loss at WrestleMania 34, it now means that Owens and Zayn would remain fired from WWE SmackDown.
