Denver Broncos: Considering a Move for Saquon Barkley is a Mistake
Saquon Barkley is probably the best player available in 2018 NFL Draft. However, is he worth moving up to get? For many teams, he might be. One such team is the Denver Broncos. Reports have surfaced that the Broncos GM. John Elway may consider trading up from the fifth spot to grab Barkley. While the Penn State RB may be worth it, this move may not be wise for the Broncos. Here is why.
The Denver Broncos have a plethora of RBs already on the roster. CJ Anderson, Devontae Booker, and De’Angelo Henderson are all on the roster. Many considered Henderson a solid late round pick last season and could be productive with the right line in front of him. Booker was once considered a number one back out of Utah before a meniscus injury in college. He has yet to find his stride with the Broncos.
That could all be related to the offensive line struggles for the Broncos. Anytime you have a running back that has been considered a college stud, that may not translate to the NFL. Especially when your offensive line struggles. The same may be said if the Denver Broncos choose to move up to select Saquon Barkley.
Thus the Broncos may not want to sell the farm for the running back. Improve the offensive line at the fifth spot in the draft. Indeed, Quenton Nelson out of Notre Dame would be an ideal pick for the Denver Broncos. Additionally, he would solidify the left side of the Broncos offensive line for years to come. Furthermore, teaming him with LT Garett Bolles provides the stability for the Broncos line. Hence, something that they have not had for a couple of years.
While Barkley would make a nice compliment to the offense of the Denver Broncos, he is not a necessity. You only move up to take him as a necessity. Protection for your new QB and current RBs is what is necessary. John Elway can certainly obtain that by staying at five.
For the Denver Broncos, drafting smart is the key to their future. Just because Barkley might make you more dynamic, building the trenches will bring the glitz. In fact, stay put Mr. Elway. Don’t take on the temptation.
