NFL Free Agency 2018: Five winners from the frenzy

Now that frenzy of NFL Free Agency is behind us we can move forward and look to the draft. However, before that can start we must take a look at the winners and losers of free agency. Many teams made themselves better by spending some money. In a two-part article, we take a look at some of these teams that won in free agency. The other part will look at the teams the teams that lost. Will you see your team on either list? Let’s start with the winners of the frenzy that was free agency.

  1. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers made a couple of huge moves to better themselves. They added a starting CB in Richard Sherman. Next, along with re-signing of their own they also added some beef and skill to their offense. Also, the Niners added C/G Weston Richburg along with RB Jerrick McKinnon. Both of these players will help keep Jimmy Garoppolo safe. Thus, this will also allow the Niners to continue to grow and be competitive in the NFC West.

  1. New York Jets

The Jets had 4 signings on the first day of free agency. They brought in a solid running back in Isaiah Crowell, added a great linebacker in Avery Williamson, and ended the day with two QBs. Additionally, they brought in a shutdown CB in Trumaine Johnson. I believe, however, that the biggest of the signings may just be one of the QBs, Teddy Bridgewater. If Bridgewater is healthy after his horrible knee injury he could just be what the doctor ordered for the New York Jets.

  1. Buffalo Bills

While the Bills may not have been as active as some other teams, the did come out big in NFL Free Agency. Day 1 produced some draft picks by trading Tyrod Taylor and Cordy Glenn. It also rid the Bills of bad contracts and created cap space. They were able to re-sign DT Kyle Williams. In addition to the re-signing of their own, they grabbed two other on the defensive side in Trent Murphy and Star Lotulelei. However, their biggest signing was bringing in AJ McCarron. He should become the immediate starting QB for the Bills.

  1. Chicago Bears

The Bears made themselves better on offense on day one of free agency. They needed to find themselves some help for franchise QB, Mitchell Trubisky. In fact, they did just that. The Bears added WRs Taylor Gabriel and Allen Robinson to their arsenal. Along with the two on the outside, the team added TE Trey Burton. Moreover, teaming these guys with the return of Cameron Meredith should give the Bears offense something to look forward too.

  1. Cleveland Browns

These are not your typical Cleveland Browns. Indeed, they came to make a statement in NFL Free Agency. Furthermore, it all began with the trade that brought WR Jarvis Landry to the Browns. Additionally, it continued with the trade for QB Tyrod Taylor. Next, on offense, they added RB Carlos Hyde. They then went on to also bring in Demarious Randall, Darren Fells, Terrance Mitchell, Chris Hubbard, Donald Stephenson, and Chris Smith. All will help improve a team that was once looked at as the NFL’s dumpster fire.

The teams for sure bettered themselves on the first day of free agency. Sometimes you have to spend a little money to make it all come together. That is what these teams did. Hence, now they can look forward to the 2018 NFL Draft in April.
