NFL Rumors: Arizona Cardinals Preparing Offer for Kirk Cousins
According to Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, the Arizona Cardinals are preparing an offer to free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins. This is just one of the many NFL rumors that fans have seen this over the weekend. Each shouldn’t be taken seriously as sometimes last-minute things happen to prevent a team from signing a player. However, this is one of those NFL rumors fans can put stock into.
The Cardinals are looking to make Kirk Cousins one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league. Mike Jurecki reports the contract details are for five years at $145 million dollars, which averages out to $29 million dollars a season.
Kirk Cousins would receive a $20 million dollar signing bonus up front with $15 million in base salary. With this deal, the Cardinals would guarantee around $90 million dollars in the first three years of the contract.
Cousins is the most sought-after free agent this offseason after throwing for 4,093 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions last season.
Some of the perks to signing with the Cardinals would be playing with a living legend in Larry Fitzgerald, as well as having one of the best upcoming running backs in the game with David Johnson. Keep in mind that the Arizona Cardinals ended up 8-8 last season even with starting multiple quarterbacks. Meaning one stable quarterback could propel the Cardinals organizations and said quarterbacks career to the next level.
Below is the other offers that have been made public this offseason:
The Vikings have said they are going to offer Cousins a three year, $91 million dollars fully guaranteed deal. However, this is not what makes the Vikings one of the highest contenders in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes. Last season the Vikings were able to get to the NFC Championship game, which means Cousins would already have weapons on offense as well as a great defense on the other end. Some say that Cousins would be the missing piece in the Vikings already solid system.
New York Jets
Business Insider.com says the New York Jets’ offer to the free agent quarterback included earning $60 million guaranteed in the very first year of the contract. The thing with the Jets, in this case, is not what is already there like in Minnesota. However with roughly over $89 Million in cap space, if they spend it wisely they could build around Kirk Cousins, making him the outspoken face of the franchise for contract’s duration.
Cousins had mentioned in an interview that he would “love it” if the Denver Broncos are interested in him, which they are. However, they are going up against three teams that have fully guaranteed deals on the table. Currently, the Denver Broncos have about $35 million in cap space to spend on a free agent, which is not a good sign in this case.
As of now, Kirk Cousins has three teams with contracts that have high amounts of cash guaranteed, something tells me he “likes that”. It’ll be interesting to see which team ends up on top in the “Kirk Cousins Sweepstakes” as the NFL rumors keep pouring in this week.
