San Francisco 49ers: How soon could Richard Sherman be a 49er?

When it comes to the San Francisco 49ers, they are a team on the rise. Last year they won the 2017 draft with one move. Then, they traded for their franchise QB, Jimmy Garoppolo at the trade deadline. Now they are looking to possibly add a veteran presence in the defensive backfield. Former Seattle Seahawk, Richard Sherman has been in talks with the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers could use some help back there too. They finished 2017 ranked 22 in pass defense. Not quite where DC Robert Saleh and his defense would like to be. The team is also young and thin on this side of the ball. Second-year player Ahkello Witherspoon would be the only returning starter. The other starter from last year, Dontae Johnson is becoming a free agent next week. Therefore, Richard Sherman could make an impact immediately.

Sherman would be returning close to where he played college ball at Stanford University. He has always admired the west coast. Thus, from a familiarity standpoint, this move makes sense for him and his family. Richard Sherman is also familiar with the defensive system that Saleh runs. That, too, could play into him choosing the San Francisco 49ers.

Meanwhile, Josina Anderson reports that Sherman has received calls from the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, and Tennessee.

However, all these teams are now in a holding pattern based on the meeting with the 49ers today.

If the San Francisco 49ers are happy with the way that Richard Sherman is healing from his torn achilles tendon then this could become the one and only stop on his tour. In fact, both teams are happy with each other after a dinner last night between HC Kyle Shanahan and Sherman himself.

This situation is one that could move very quickly. Although nothing is written in concrete, Richard Sherman could be a member of the 49ers soon.
