Denver Broncos Rumors: Team is Shopping Aqib Talib
It is widely known that the Denver Broncos need to clear salary. Especially if they want a chance in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes. One way to do this is to trade or release players. One of the players is CB, Aqib Talib. Talib is entering his 5th season with the Broncos. However, they have youth behind him that would cost much less. Thus, the Broncos are shopping the long-time cornerback.
Reports came out this week that the Denver Broncos have engaged in trade talks with the San Francisco 49ers with regard to trading Talib. However, neither team revealed compensation as to what either side would give up. Nonetheless, in the same report, Talib has said he would prefer the Broncos release him, so he could have his choice. Meanwhile, his contract does not contain any no-trade clause.
While this may be the case for his current contract, if Talib is not satisfied with the trade partner, he may not be willing to restructure. Thus causing issues for the Broncos to trade him. Therefore, it could limit the number of teams based on salary cap depth.
Aqib Talib is due $12 million dollars in 2018 from the Denver Broncos. Only $1 million of that is guaranteed. Thus, the Broncos would save $11 million dollars by trading or releasing the veteran corner.
Talib has stated that he would like to return to play with the New England Patriots. If he is willing to play for a lesser amount in 2018, this could be a possibility. The Patriots are in need of a second corner after not re-signing Malcolm Butler. Currently, they have Stephon Gilmore playing opposite Johnson Bademosi. So the Patriots could use the services of Aqib Talib.
If, the Denver Broncos want to have a chance to sign any QB they will have to clear some money. Talib is one of the higher contracts on the books. With the youth and smaller salary behind him, he makes sense. Now we will see if they can also find a trade partner.
