Washington Redskins: 2018 is a must-win season for Bruce Allen

For the Washington Redskins, the concept of having a general manager goes by the waste side. The team has run its operation for many years with head coaches and Daniel Snyder having the final say on the roster. Then Along came Bruce Allen. He wanted to bring more structure to the front office of the Redskins. Thus, the team signed Scot McCloughan. However, after two seasons the team terminated his contract. Now the team is back in a familiar situation. Allen is playing multiple roles. A situation that has seen him fail before.

For Bruce Allen to be successful and maintain his job with the Washington Redskins past 2018, he will need to win in free agency and the draft. The first step was completing the trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for Alex Smith. There was a growing sense that incumbent QB Kirk Cousins did not want to be a member of the Redskins. Therefore, they let him walk and grabbed a QB that may better serve them anyway.

Allen is also going to have to win during free agency. The Redskins currently have roughly $32 million in cap space. They need to make a move at WR and Linebacker. If Bruce Allen wants to bring a winner back to the Nation’s Capital he will definitely address these two areas. Along with these areas, he needs to try to find a way to re-sign a couple of his own free agents (Bashaud Breeland and Zach Brown).

The third area for Allen to win at is the 2018 NFL Draft. The Washington Redskins hold the 13th overall pick in the first round. Here he could certainly draft a linebacker such as Roquan Smith (Georgia) or Rashaan Evans (Alabama). If they are not available come 13, it could be a prime opportunity to trade down. Gain some picks from a team who is eager to move up and grab their player. This could definitely be a winning move. However, wasting the pick on a receiver or other player could result in a bad draft grade.

Indeed, Bruce Allen is in a must-win position for his job. In fact, if he wins in the offseason, the Washington Redskins could be a winner in 2017. Although, if he does not, he, along with Jay Gruden, could be looking for work in 2019.
