Pittsburgh Steelers: Tagged again, Will Le’Veon Bell Retire?
Now that the franchise tag deadline has passed, the players will have decisions to make. One, in particular, is Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell. The Steelers placed the Exclusive Franchise Tag on him on Tuesday. Thus, allowing the team to be the only ones who can negotiate with Bell. However, there is a twist to this situation. Bell has stated that if the Steelers placed the tag on him that he would consider retiring. Would he truly consider retiring? Why Not.
Bell wants to be paid for his true services. He sees himself not just as a running back. He sees himself not as a wide receiver. In fact, Le’Veon Bell views himself as an offensive weapon. Therefore, Bell wants to be paid like one.
The franchise price tag for a running back in 2018 is $14.5 million. This is due to it being the second consecutive tag they have used. Hence, resulting in a 20% increase in value. While this is enough for any other particular back, it may not be for Bell.
Le’Veon Bell certainly has a viable case for higher pay. In 2017, Bell had 85 catches for 655 yards and 2 TDs. He also ran the ball very well. Carrying the rock 321 times for 1,291 yards and 9 TDs. The 321 carries were tops in the league.
Will Le’Veon Bell Retire?
Why Not. He does not need football per say. Bell has established himself in the music industry as one of the best up and coming artists. Thus, setting himself up for life after football. So if he really wanted to call the bluff of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell could walk.
Bell could also hold out and not sign the tag until the last possible moment. This was the tactic he deployed last season. He missed the entire training camp and most of the preseason until he decided to sign his one-year tender.
Now that the tag is placed what does Le’Veon Bell do? If retirement is really an option, then we could see one of the best running backs to ever play the game leave at an early age. Barry Sanders part 2?
