NFL: Why The Oakland Raiders Can Win The Super Bowl
As the NFL Combine winds down and we head into the NFL Draft, we must begin to look at teams that missed the playoffs last season who have a chance to win it all this year. The team for me is the newly Jon Gruden led Oakland Raiders.
How Will The Oakland Raiders Look On Offense:
Top to bottom, this roster is poised to make a serious run in the playoffs. On offense, guys like Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, Marshawn Lynch, and Michael Crabtree look to lead a stellar offense. The main focus of the offense that can take the team to the championship is the offensive line. Rodney Hudson, who missed games last season with knee and ankle injuries, will be back and joined by Gabe Jackson, Kelechi Osemele, and Donald Penn. This group, mixed with veterans and youth will look to plow the way for Carr and the positional players. During the draft, the Raiders should look to add a replacement at running back as Lynch hasn’t played at the same level since retirement. A few guys they could take in the later rounds are; Rashaad Penny out of San Diego State and Arizona State’s Kalen Ballage.
How Will The Oakland Raiders Look On Defense:
Looking at the defense, this team has so much talent and very few holes. Khalil Mack has been a force to be reckoned with since entering the league in 2014. He will be joined again by Karl Joseph– the hard-hitting safety and Bruce Irvin, both West Virginia Alum. If the Oakland Raiders are serious about making a playoff run with coach Jon Gruden, they will need to add another corner to this roster. Sean Smith hasn’t played up to expectations since joining the team and Obi Melifonwu is likely to remain at safety. Derwin James out of Florida State makes a lot of sense going to this team and replicates Gruden’s first draft pick in the NFL Charles Woodson.
The AFC West is at an all-time low with the Broncos struggling to find a consistent quarterback and the Chiefs starting anew with Patrick Mahomes who will replace recently traded Alex Smith. The only real threat the Raiders will have is the Los Angeles Chargers, who just missed the playoffs during the 2017 season. With a new scheme and attitude brought to this team, we may get to see Derek Carr holding up the Lombardi trophy next year.
