Denver Broncos Rumors: Do they want the No. 1 Pick in the NFL Draft?
Are the Denver Broncos thinking about number one? I am not just talking about in the NFL either. There are reports out that the Broncos GM, John Elway has opened up talks with the Cleveland Browns reference the number one overall pick. Browns GM John Dorsey has already said he is willing to talk about the draft pick. Elway is really seeking an immediate improvement for his team if this is the case.
For the Denver Broncos to move on this move it will be congruent to the placing of Kirk Cousins. Elway and the Broncos are one of the four final destinations for the most talked about free agent in years. However, a money issue comes into play for the orange and blue. Some are saying that Cousins will want a short-term deal (3-years) with $90 million guaranteed. If that were the case, the Broncos are better off moving to number one.
Many are linking the Broncos to three out of the top five quarterbacks in this year’s draft. Josh Allen (Wyoming), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), and most recently Josh Rosen (UCLA). So, it would make sense to move up to number one. At least for two out of the three. Baker Mayfield is not worthy of the number one overall pick. Nonetheless, Rosen and Allen are seen that high.
It is not unheard of for teams to be clamoring for position. Especially if the player you want is rumored to another team as well. In fact, the Washington Redskins moved up from six in 2012 to the number two spot to select Robert Griffin III. Just last year the Chicago Bears moved up one spot to draft the guy they feel can lead them back to glory. Thus, the Denver Broncos would not be setting a trend.
Regarding a move, it would probably cost the Broncos a swapping of firsts in 2018, a first in 2019, and possibly of swapping of later round picks in either ’18 or ’19. Indeed it could be steep. However, there is sometimes no price too steep to get the player you feel can lead your team for years into the future.
John Elway has his mind-set on improving the QB position. Based on the money at hand, the draft may just be the route to go.
