NFL Draft 2018

NFL Draft 2018: Potential First Round Buyers

The 2018 NFL Draft is less than eight weeks away. The NFL Combine has started. The time between the combine and the draft is what I like to call “Smokescreen Season”. I call it this because 90 percent of what you hear is generally B.S. or to use the parlance of the times, “Fake News”.

Let’s sift through the haze and look at the teams that are prime candidates to trade up in this year’s NFL draft.

Who wants to move up?

NFL Draft 2018

Pick No. 6 – New York Jets

The Jets have to acquire a QB at some point. They either have to sign Kirk Cousins or draft one. Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are not going to work. They could stay at six and get possibly the fourth quarterback on the board or they could move up and get the one they want.

BB PREDICTION: Jets move up to draft a QB

Pick No. 7 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay looked ready to take the next step before the 2017 but then the wheels fell off. They need a pass rusher and the only one with top ten value is Bradley Chubb. In order to acquire Chubb, they will have to jump ahead of Indy. If they stay put I think the offensive line may be addressed.

BB PREDICTION: Tampa tries to move up but can’t

Pick No. 11 – Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins have a lot of holes and may want to move on from QB Ryan Tannehill. If they decide that Tannehill isn’t their man anymore then they are a prime candidate to move up for a pass distributor. They are without a fourth-round pick after acquiring defensive end Robert Quinn from the Rams, so their ammunition is limited.

BB PREDICTION: Miami stays put

Pick No. 15 – Arizona Cardinals

Carson Palmer has retired leaving a big hole under center for the Cards. I think it will cost a huge amount for them to move up to get one of the top quarterbacks. However, if one of them starts to fall, Arizona could pounce.

BB PREDICTION: Arizona moves up into the ninth through 12th overall pick range to draft a quarterback that falls

Los Angeles Chargers

Pick No. 17 – Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have to start preparing for life after QB Phillip Rivers, so they may want to move up for a QB. Not unlike Arizona, the Bolts will have to pay a lot to get one of the top quarterbacks. They will have to offer potentially more than the Cardinals.

BB PREDICTION: Chargers don’t offer enough to move up

Pick No. 21 and 22 – Buffalo Bills

The Bills potentially need a new quarterback (Do you sense a trend?). Unlike the Chargers and Arizona, Buffalo has the ammunition to move up possibly as high the top five. Does it make sense? It depends on the QB they are moving up for. Is it Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield? Then do it. Is it Josh Allen? Then do not.

BB PREDICTION: Bills keep both of their first-round picks

Pick No. 28 – Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers have to start preparing for life after QB Ben Roethlisberger (Seriously! How many teams need QBs!). Pittsburgh will have to sacrifice future picks to move up to get one of the top QBs in the draft. That is not really this franchise’s style.

BB PREDICTION: Steelers stay put.

PICK No. 33 and 35 – Cleveland Browns

Last year Cleveland had already made two first-round picks and then traded back into the round to select TE David Njoku. This year they have two early picks in round one. I think there will be a player that slips to the bottom of day one and Cleveland will want to use one of their early second round picks (and a couple of other picks) to move up.

BB PREDICTION: Cleveland packages pick 33 and fourth and fifth round picks to move up into the mid-twenties.

Let us know in the comments who you think will likely move up in the first round of the NFL Draft.

I will have a Combine recap for your reading pleasure on Tuesday!
