Examining How Ant-Man, The Wasp, and Captain Marvel Fit Into The MCU
Marvel will find themselves in a unique situation later this year. Following the release of Avengers: Infinity War this coming May, there will only be a one year wait until fans of the MCU get the next Avengers film. This is likely due to the third and fourth installments of the Avengers franchise will be closely connected, with Thanos expected to play a key role in both movies. But with that said, it puts Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, the two MCU films being released between those films, in an interesting spot.
The reasoning for that is because of the Marvel connectivity. It’s no secret that these films are closely related, with events of films based around one character having a pretty big impact on the film of another. That is the beauty of a connective universe like the MCU. So assuming the third and fourth Avengers films are set virtually one after another, what does that mean for the other two Marvel films getting released between now and May of 2019?
Well, let’s take a closer look at some points we do know about each film.
Let’s start with Ant-Man and the Wasp, which will see the fourth appearance of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang (his third appearance will come during Infinity War). The film will be released July 6th of this year, wrapping up the Marvel slate for 2018.
Based on the film’s first trailer, it seems a safe bet the events of the film will be taking place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. So one would think that would make things pretty straight-forward, right? Well not so fast.
We know Wasp did not appear during Civil War. Based on the Ant-Man/Wasp’s first trailer, we now know Scott never told Hope he was going off to fight alongside Captain America. Given the sequels’ title, it seems a good bet the duo will become a true team during the course of the film. So with that said, one would expect to see the two fighting side-by-side during Infinity War, given these events take place after Ant-Man/Wasp, no?
Not so fast, as Wasp is not set to appear in the third installment of the Avengers, but will be in Avengers four. While this writer is not expecting a large role for Ant-Man in Infinity War, given the abundance of characters and his lack of involvement in promo materials, it is still odd not to have Wasp by his side for the film.
So this leads this writer to believe there will be a connection between Wasp and Captain Marvel that leads to both characters missing out on Infinity War, but then making a grand entrance in the fourth film.
Taking a quick step back, let’s look at the bigger picture of Captain Marvel real quick. The film, which will introduce Brie Larson as the title hero on March 8, 2019, is going to be set in the 1990’s. The film will introduce the Skrulls to the MCU, who may or may not play a role in the fourth Avengers films. Nick Fury will have two eyes in the film (although something tells me we will see exactly why he is currently sporting the eye patch).
Now, if the film introduces Carol Danvers in the 1990’s, how could we be getting the same Brie Larson to appear in the present day nearly 30 years later in the MCU? Well, the answer may lie in a connection to Ant-Man and the Wasp. More specifically, the Quantum Realm, which has been confirmed to have some sort of role in the film.
We have seen Steve Rogers preserved on ice for multiple decades, which allowed Chris Evans to appear in a period piece when first introduced as Captain America. Now, there is a good chance we see Carol Danvers get stuck in the Quantum Realm to finish her 90’s adventure, given time plays no role in this realm.
Transitioning back to Ant-Man and the Wasp, as this film will be partially around rescuing Janet Van Dyne from said Quantum Realm where she has been stuck for years, presumed dead. Scott Lang has already proven he can go there and come back. So assuming they can rescue Janet in the film, it will be evidence that someone can be stuck there for years, only to be brought back, unaged, years later.
The most likely reasoning behind Wasp’s absence from Infinity War is she will end Ant-Man and the Wasp in the Quantum Realm. Maybe she gets stuck there herself? Maybe after rescuing her mother, she wants to go back to learn more about it. It would make sense to have a credit scene that shows her going back, possibly to investigate something she saw during the events of the film.
Then they will have things set up to have Wasp cameo in Captain Marvel, likely during a credit scene, where she encounters Carol Danvers for the first time. This will allow for both characters to sit out Infinity War and both get experience working alongside one another. Captain Marvel is going to need a way of joining the team, so pairing her with Wasp would lead to a seamless introduction to the rest of the team.
