There was word recently that the Cavs had wanted to move Thomas. He had played himself out in Cleveland. This after he was a part of a blockbuster trade this summer. However, his game was not the same after he returned to the court after a hip injury. Thus, the Cavs were not willing to wait for him to return to full health.
In fact, by acquiring Clarkson the Cleveland Cavaliers get a pure scoring guard. He is averaging 14.5 points per game while shooting just under 45% from the field.
Nance Jr returns to the team in which his dad was once a star forward. With the Cavs current situation at the position, he will become a rotational player.
Meanwhile, the Lakers acquire two expiring contracts in Thomas and Frye. When the year is over, the Los Angeles Lakers will have an estimated $47 million in cap space. They can raise that space to $70 million by choosing not to renew the contract of Julius Randall.
With this trade, both teams are set for the future. The Cavs get some youth in Jordan Clarkson and the Lakers are able to open salary cap space to try to be major players in free agency.
The NBA Trade Deadline is today at 3 PM Eastern. Will this be the last we have heard from these teams? Maybe not. Stay tuned it could be an active afternoon.
