Denver Broncos Rumors: John Elway ready to make BIG run at Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins
For the Washington Redskins, it is all but certain that they will be playing 2018 with a new man under center. Reports from the Senior Bowl are saying that Denver Broncos GM John Elway is preparing to make a considerable run at current Redskins signal-caller Kirk Cousins. Cousins will be a free agent in March barring a miracle by the Redskins. So what does this mean for both teams?
The Washington Redskins will, once again, be opening that door to the carousel of QBs. Cousins has been the closest thing that the organization has had to a franchise QB since Joe Theismann. By not giving a contract extension to the QB, the Redskins could once again be looking at years of mediocrity.
Cousins has led the team to the playoffs. He has also led the team to back-to-back winning seasons (2015, 16). The team was one game away from finishing .500 or better in 2017. This would have been the first time since 1999-2001 that the Redskins had 3 consecutive .500 or better seasons. It is time to ante up some bucks for the QB.
However, there are many fans that feel he is not worth the salary that market is mandating. Thus, there are some that do too. Nonetheless, it is the position and the market that drive the value.
Cousins has played is cards right in the whole situation as well. By playing the past two seasons on the franchise tag, Kirk Cousins has made almost $45 million in guaranteed money. That is well above what the Washington Redskins have offered in salary.
How do the Washington Redskins replace Cousins?
Right now the belief is that the starting QB could become Colt McCoy. However, The Redskins could make a run at a free agent QB. A couple of names that come to mind are Teddy Bridgewater (Minnesota Vikings) and Sam Bradford (Minnesota Vikings). AJ McCarron is currently a restricted free agent. Nevertheless, keep this name in the back of your mind. He has played in head coach Jay Gruden’s system before.
The Redskins could also use the 13th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to draft a QB. Name like Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma Sooners) and Josh Allen (Wyoming Cowboys) could be in play. Another name that has been rumored around the Washington Redskins Draft is Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State Cowboys).
What does this mean for the Denver Broncos?
It means that John Elway is wanting to win and win now. He knows that he has the talents on his squad to be successful immediately. Getting a QB like Cousins would immediately put the Denver Broncos back into contention for the AFC West Division. Especially with weapons like Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jordan Taylor, CJ Anderson, and Jake Butt. Cousins would have plenty of weapons to throw the ball to.
Knowing that they could actually move the ball again in 2018, the defense of the Denver Broncos would not have to be so focused on having to win football games.
If the rumors are true, the Denver Broncos are ready to make a BIG run at Cousins. So for Broncos fans, it could be the positional need they covet. For the Washington Redskins, just another chapter in the book of screw ups.
