Cleveland Browns: Hiring Todd Haley A Master Stroke

The Cleveland Browns have hired offensive guru Todd Haley to be their offensive coordinator. By doing so, Haley will bring an offensive flair to the Cleveland Browns. Something that was missing for a long time, along with a consistency that has eluded this organization. The Pittsburgh Steelers fired Haley last week following their upset loss in the AFC divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In his previous stops as an offensive coordinator, Haley consistently constructed prolific offenses. Even in his Steelers finale, Pittsburgh hung 42 points on the NFL’s second-ranked defense.  Over the final four years of his Steelers tenure, the Steelers were second in scoring. Only the New England Patriots were better. He was also the offensive mastermind overseeing the Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl XLIII offense.

Unfortunately, his temper has hampered his career. Haley is a hit in the X’s and O’s department. However, misses the mark in his communication with players and personnel. His three seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach ended as he created enemies within the organization, burnished his reputation for being difficult to play for and privately warred with general manager Scott Pioli. He also butted heads with Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, both publicly and privately.

Todd Haley may benefit from working with a younger quarterback with whom he can mold. However, he is walking into a hornet’s nest and will face a much more daunting task in Cleveland. The Browns will likely be grooming either second-year quarterback DeShone Kizer or another rookie quarterback and a rookie running back. Also, they return Josh Gordon, who has not seen a full season of football in almost three years. He may also find himself looking at a front office attempting to replace future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas in 2018.

Cleveland’s 32nd-ranked offense needs this “kick in the pants” and Haley isn’t afraid to provide it. His success is only a matter of his coaching acumen weighed against his temper and disputes with players. Haley is a control freak and a young team may be a perfect landing for him. Haley’s imprint will be all over the Browns offensive remodeling. Todd Haley will also assume play-calling duties from head coach Hue Jackson.
