Arizona Cardinals: Head Coach Bruce Arians Retires after 5 Seasons

Head Coaching changes are a yearly thing in the NFL. However, it is rare that it happens from a retirement. More often than not, the change comes from the team firing the current coach. However, that is not the case in Arizona. The Arizona Cardinals are now in search of a new head coach after their current one, Bruce Arians retired on Monday.

Arians coached the Arizona Cardinals for five seasons. He amassed a record of 49-30 for his career with the Cardinals. With their victory on Sunday, Arians became the winningest coach in Cardinals history.

Prior to his tenure with the Cardinals, Arians was the interim head coach with the Indianapolis Colts. He served from weeks 5-16 in 2012. This was at a time in which former Colts Head Coach was going through a battle with cancer.

The success of Bruce Arians was seen immediately. Before his arrival, the Arizona Cardinals had a very troubling 2011 season. Under the guidance of Ken Whisenhunt, the Cardinals struggled to find an identity. Thus, the team finished 5-11. That was good for 4th place in the NFC West.

Under Bruce Arians, the Arizona Cardinals only finished below .500 once. That was in 2016 when the team went 7-8-1. However, even with that losing record the team still finished second in the division.

Bruce Arians took the Cardinals to the playoffs in consecutive seasons, 2014 and 2015. Both times they were defeated by the Carolina Panthers. 2014 that defeat was in the Wild Card Game and 2015 it came in the NFC Championship Game. Also, he has never reached the Super Bowl as a head coach.

Arians retires from the Cardinals amides some health concerns. He has had a couple of health scares over the past couple of seasons. Additionally, he is a prostate cancer survivor.

What is next for Bruce Arians?

Arians does have a media agent. We could see him as a member of the media in the near future. Could that be in 2018? Possibly. However, I would look for him to take some time to think about his future and spend some time with his family. He is 65-years-old.

What is next for the Arizona Cardinals?

As soon as the news broke that Arians was indeed retiring from the Cardinals, the interview requests started coming out. Currently, the team has requested to interview Minnesota Vikings OC Pat Shurmur. There most certainly will be others to come through the doors as well.

Also, look for the Arizona Cardinals to be major players in the offseason quarterback market. Current QB Carson Palmer is up in years and could be looking at a retirement of his own soon.

The Arizona Cardinals opening should be one of the more attractive openings. They have a young nucleus and are only a couple of pieces from competing majorly in the NFL. Look for this opening to fill rather quickly.
