NFL Coaching Rumors: Oakland Raiders to pursue Jon Gruden

The old saying goes, history repeats itself. On the other hand, could it be Deja Vu? No matter what you want to call it, it may happen in the NFL. How, you might be asking? A report has surfaced that the Oakland Raiders are to be pursuing the coaching services of one, Jon Gruden. Yes, the same Jon Gruden that was traded from the Raiders to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This could change the landscape of the AFC West.

The first question that one should ask is if Gruden would even be interested in a return. After all, he has a posh gig in the booth on Monday Night Football. Preliminary indication is that Gruden is very interested in the offer. It consists of a stake in ownership of the Oakland Raiders. This is something that Davis has offered Gruden in the past. However, it was unsuccessful.

Sources close to the situation believe that this could move quickly. On the other hand, there is one thing that could hold it up. The same agent as current Raiders Head Coach, Jack del Rio, represents Gruden. So, this could have some unpredictable complications.

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis has always had a high regard for Jon Gruden. Thus, being able to pull the man out of the booth could be a bit easier for Davis than other owners who have since tried.

Jon Gruden is a marked man every year around this time. In fact, many owners try to pursue him for their openings. However, he has never had an inclination to return. Nonetheless, this time could be different. Many believe that the Raiders are prepared to make an offer so juicy it will be hard for Gruden to turn it down.

In his four previous years with the Oakland Raiders, Jon Gruden had an excellent coaching record. In 1998, he went 8-8. He went 8-8 again in 1999. His next season, in 2001, he won an AFC West Championship with a record of 12-4. The Raiders would lose to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. Gruden’s final season in Oakland, he would win another AFC West Championship. However, the Raiders would again lose in the AFC Championship Game to the New England Patriots.

Bringing Jon Gruden back to where his head coaching started could be a blessing. Hence, this will be an interesting story to follow.
