Avengers: Infinity War – Will Thor and Groot Share An Important Relationship?

With Thor: Ragnarok now in everyone’s rearview mirror, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are looking ahead. MCU fans know they have Black Panther coming in February. Even though that film looks amazing, it is the month of May that has fans chomping at the bit. Why? Because that’s when Avengers: Infinity War will be hitting theaters of course! And with so much set to go down in that film, fans might be overlooking what could be a critical relationship between the likes of Thor and Groot!

Before getting into more detail, let’s talk a moment to look at the current landscape of the MCU. The last we saw Thor, he was on a spaceship with the likes of Hulk, Loki, and the entire Asgardian population. However, they are in for a rough time, as their ship was confronted by Thanos’ ship during the mid-credit scene.

As for Groot, he was in baby form as the Guardians of the Galaxy mourned the loss of Yondu at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But in one of the credit-scenes, Groot had grown to teenage form. Fans then got confirmation it would, in fact, be Teenage Groot that would seem in Avengers: Infinity War when the film’s first trailer was unveiled

Speaking of the trailer, here is a refresher.

Now pay attention to the end. Thor has found himself aboard the Milano along with the Guardians. So it seems the God of Thunder will be spending at least a part of the film along Groot and the gang. Given the size of this film, nothing is going to happen by accident. That begs the question, what significance will this pairing have?

The answer likely lies in the growing importance of everyone’s favorite talking tree. The reason, Groot could very well be revealed to be Yggdrasil.

Before explaining what that means for the MCU moving forward, let’s explain who/what Yggdrasil is for all of you scratching your head. If you go way back to Captain America: The First Avenger, Johann Schmidt, better known as the man who becomes the Red Skull, describes Yggdrasil as “the tree of the world” and the guardian of both wisdom and fate.

This is a tree that is supposedly a connector between the nine realms. Oh and let’s not forget, its roots lie deep within Norse mythology. Seeing any connections to the current King of Asgard yet?

Now let’s go back to the end of Ragnarok to bring this point home. Asgard has essentially been destroyed. Along with it, the Bifrost Bridge. This was a bridge that was of assistance to help Asgardians go from realm to realm. Without it, how in the world is Thor supposed to travel to say, Nidavellir, where Eitri, the King of the Dwarves is?

The answer: Groot!

Upon arriving on the Milano, Thor is sure going to be very confused. After Star-Lord and Gamora try to explain to him who they are while also trying to figure out who he is, it will be the friendly face of a tree that brings some relief to the Asgardian.

None of the Guardians really know much about Groot. This includes where he comes from. The God of Thunder will help fill in those gaps, likely explaining how Groot is actually of Asgardian descent. From here, he will wish to use Yggdrasil to bring him to Eitri, rumored to be the character played by Peter Dinklage, to forge a new weapon. Or maybe even a second Infinity Gauntlet!

It seems entirely likely that Chris Hemsworth’s character will need to visit the King of the Dwarves during the course of Infinity War. So it is only logical to have Groot play a role in getting him there given what we do know about the film.

This will allow for Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, and Mantis to head out to pay a visit to the Collector. Thor, Groot, and Rocket take the trip to Nidavellir. What do you think? Will Groot be revealed as Yggdrasil in Avengers: Infinity War? Tell us what you think in the comments!
