San Francisco 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo era starts with a comeback win
Back on October 30, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers completed a trade that would send a 2018 second round pick to the New England Patriots. In exchange for that pick, the 49ers would receive QB Jimmy Garoppolo. In a trade with this type of mantra, you would expect the player to bet starting ASAP. However, it took 4 weeks for Garoppolo to start. The results would be well worth it. The Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco started with his first fourth-quarter comeback win, 15-14 over the Chicago Bears.
Ever since the San Francisco 49ers named Kyle Shanahan the head coach, the talk we have heard is that all QBs on the roster are stopgaps. 2018 would the year he would get his franchise QB. With the team being well under the salary cap, they would be ready to offer Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins a significant contract. While that still could be the case, it is less likely after the trade.[SeanNaylor2Ads]
Many view Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup QB who could one day lead a franchise. The NFL got a preview of his assets during the first two weeks of the 2016 season. He led the New England Patriots to a 2-0 record. Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury so the preview was short-lived. His stats were very impressive throughout this stint. 43-63 for 502 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INT. He had a QBR of 113.3.
His first start with the San Francisco 49ers would be worth the wait for their fans. Although he would throw his first NFL INT and 0 TDs, he would still be more effective than any 49ers QB on the season. Moreover, he would spread the ball around to eight different receivers for 26 completions. Thus, finishing the day 26-37 for 293 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 INT. Hence, his play gives the 49ers some hope at the most critical position on the field.
While the future of Jimmy Garoppolo may not be clear with the 49ers, Sunday certainly had promise. Whether the San Francisco 49ers keep Garoppolo with a long-term contract or franchise tag the next 4 weeks should fuel the fire. The fire of whether or not Jimmy G can lead a franchise or is just a backup.
