New York Giants: No Success in the Black Hole
Another week, another loss
The New York Giants head out to Oakland to play the Raiders. With the week the Giants had off the field, no one expected them to defeat the Raiders today. The Giants were walking into a no-win situation. Before I get into the game, I would like to mention that Geno Smith played ok, He went 21/34 for 212 yards and 1 Touchdown. For someone who was making his first start in three years, those are not terrible numbers. The feeling among the Giants fans that I spoke to was that this wasn’t going to a pretty game.
The first half was much closer than most Giants fans thought it would be. As they head into the half, the Giants were only down 10-7. Unfortunately, this is when the problems started. After the Raiders fumbled the ball, this gave the Giants an opportune moment. Former Giant, Jeff Feagles, made the point during the postgame show about this play. He would have liked for the Giants to get some plays going. This would have lead to a possible field goal. I am not saying it would have helped the Giants win, but it would have made it a much different game. Here is the play sequence I am talking about. The Raiders fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Landon Collins The next three plays for the Giants were a three-yard run by Paul Perkins. Geno then went to throw the ball and had two incomplete passes.
We would end up seeing the Giants punt the ball to end the first half. It would have been nice to be tied up heading into the half, but being down by three wasn’t the end of the world. We wouldn’t see any scoring until the fourth quarter. Let I not forget, the Giants were still down by three points. As the fourth quarter began, it seemed the Giants forgot there was one more quarter. Right out of the gate, Derek Carr would connect with DeAndre Washington. This put the game at 17-7. The Giants would then answer back when Geno Smith connected with Evan Engram for a ten-yard touchdown. The Giants were still not out of it as they were able to bring it back to within three points.
It seemed that as the Giants would respond to the Raiders, they would answer back. After the Giants were able to bring the game within three points, the Raiders got another touchdown. This time we would see Derek Carr connect with Johnny Holton. The Giants then got a field goal which leads us to the score of 24-17.
I am far from surprised that the Giants lose. However, I am more surprised that they were able to keep it within a touchdown. I had little expectations for this game with Geno Smith starting. This does not change my take on that this team has problems. It seems that they are moving on from Eli Manning and I hope Geno Smith isn’t the answer.I hope we get to see Davis Webb sooner rather than later.
The next game for the New York Giants is a home game against their NFC East rivals, Dallas Cowboys. The Oakland Raiders are going to be playing there AFC West rivals, Kansas City Chiefs.
