New Orleans Saints: Alvin Kamara next in line for Offensive Rookie of the Year?

Injuries can often change the landscape of a team and the success of their season. It can also have an effect on individual player awards. Take for instance the Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY). Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson seemed to be the clear front-runner before blowing his ACL. A close second would have been Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt. However, he has had a non-existent second half of the season. Since then no one is really talking about this award. Nonetheless, I will throw out one name for this award. He has made a threat of winning it over the past couple of weeks. That player is Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints.

The New Orleans Saints drafted Kamara in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He carried many comparisons to former Saints RB Reggie Bush on draft day. At the time, the Saints had Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram on the roster. He is a prototypical three-down back. He has excellent size and speed. Kamara also shows a tremendous set of hands out of the backfield. Alvin Kamara has also shown the ability to return kicks.

Since he made his debut on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, Kamara has only improved. He received limited action at the beginning of the season with Mark Ingram seeing a bulk of the carries. However, since week 8 he has seen his playing time increase. He is averaging nine carries and 65 yards per game. That is just on the ground. Additionally, Alvin Kamara is averaging five receptions and 68 yards through the air.

Alvin Kamara is not just doing this against slouch defenses. The Saints have played some of the best defenses in the league. We are talking the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Buffalo Bills just to name a few. If he keeps up this pace, he could be well on his way to earning OROY honors.

On Sunday, Kamara became the first RB since Herschel Walker to run for 600 yards and have 600 yards receiving in his first 11 games. This is just another notch on the stat sheet. The New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara have four games remaining. Hence, those four games could be the wrapping paper on the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
