Avengers: Infinity War – 5 Ways The Marvel Blockbuster Could End

Five more months. That is how long Marvel fans will have to wait until the third installment of the Avengers franchise, Avengers: Infinity War, hits theaters. While May 4th, 2018 is not right around the corner, it is close enough for MCU fans to start speculating on some fun new theories.

Rumors and speculation have only grown since the release of the first trailer last week. We have even put together our own list of 10 questions that have come out of the trailer, which you can view at the bottom of this article.

Now, let’s think about a few things. For starters, we know this movie is going to have an epic cast. More than likely every key character from the MCU films is expected to make some sort of appearance. As a result, there will surely be a lot going on.

Through it all, we know Thanos and his Black Order will be the film’s baddies. They will be on the hunt for the six Infinity Stones. Five of those have appeared in Marvel films before, while the Soul Stone is still at large. The speculation is it will be found in Wakanda, likely during Black Panther, which would make sense based on the amount of action in Wakanda in the trailer.

But we also know this won’t be the end of Thanos. Avengers 4 will be “a finale”, likely meaning it wraps the story arcs for many fan-favorite characters. It is widely expected Thanos will once again be the big bad in that film as well. While both films are described as being totally different movies, not a part one/part two scenario, it still feels like Infinity War will not end in typical fashion.

Typically the good guys come out on top to finish a movie. But in Avengers: Infinity War, despite it being five months out, that seems like a long shot. Thanos will likely still be a huge threat. Some heroes will fall. So the question becomes, what cliffhanger will Marvel end Infinity War on? Let’s look at some possible answers!

Thanos collects the final stone

In the trailer, we can see Thanos has collected two stones; the Power Stone and the Space Stone. But he is certainly not going to stop there. With the film described as a “heist film”, the Mad Titan will be on a mission to collect all six.

Now the problem is, it would feel a little weird to have him collect the sixth and final before the film’s last climactic battle. As a result, it is entirely possible the film’s final battle is over one of those stones. But instead of the good guys coming out on top, Thanos secures the stone. He could then disappear to go put his plan in motion, leaving fans to wonder what trouble the Avengers are in for an entire year.

Avengers Assemble

It is safe to say that there will be a lot of members. Logic would then indicate that they will be different locations. This will result in some awesome team-ups, such as Doctor Strange with Star-Lord, Cap and Black Panther and so many other combos. However, for the majority of the film, a good portion of characters will likely not interact with some of the others a single time.

Most films have a few follow up scenes following the climactic battle. So here’s an idea. After losing the last stone to Thanos, why don’t ALL of Marvel’s heroes come together for a meeting, likely at Avengers Tower? It would be a cool moment to see so many characters unite before the credits roll. This will give fans a sense of hope as they leave the theater.

The death of an iconic character

Sadly, this seems like a distinct possibility. There is no doubt Infinity War is going to be a bloodbath in a sense, with several characters likely to lose their lives. Given the current landscape of the MCU, we know characters like Spider-Man and Black Panther are pretty safe. But Cap and Iron Man, not so much.

Many fans were expecting to see the iconic moment of Tony sitting over Cap’s dead body, with his shield on his chest, back in Captain America: Civil War. It is entirely possible Marvel has held that iconic moment for the closing moments of Infinity War. Ending the film with such a big, shocking death would certainly have people in awe. Then a year later we might enter theaters to see a funeral scene as the opening scene.

A team divided

The team is going to be sectioned off throughout the film, as mentioned before. We know Thor is going to be in space with the Guardians. Hulk and Black Widow will be joining Cap, Bucky and Black Panther in Wakanda. Doctor Strange and Spidey will be in New York to start. The list goes on and on.

So as the film comes to a close, it is certainly possible we see factions of heroes in different locations. Each one of these groups will likely be defeated in a sense, having lost the stone they were set to protect. So as the film reaches its conclusion, they may simply jump from place to place, with plenty of sad faces. This will help confirm where everyone stands as they enter Avengers 4. If Marvel’s goal is to have the audience leave feeling defeated, which is possible, this is certainly an option.

The heroes keep hold of one stone

Now let’s consider the curveball option. Everyone is just under the assumption that Thanos walks out of this film in possession of all six stones. So what about if the Avengers actually get a mini-victory in the final battle? As the fight goes on for the last stone, one or a few members of the team are able to escape with the stone. Thanos and the Black Order then retreat to re-think their strategy in acquiring it.

This would set up the start of Avengers 4 with a defined plot. Thanos and his children will be hunting the final stone, acquire it mid-way through, then have one last final showdown. If Thanos has all six stones at the start of Avengers 4, the entire film will see our heroes trying to defeat this ultra-powerful being.

Obviously, there are a bunch of directions this film could take. The ending, however, will be critical. Avengers Fans will be left wondering for a year about the ending.

Given Marvel’s track record, fans will surely be confident that the conclusion will be perfect. The stakes for this movie will be high. There will be a bigger movie coming out a year after.
