Auburn Tigers vs Alabama Crimson Tide

2017 Iron Bowl: Can The Auburn Tigers Shock The Nation Again?

For the Auburn Tigers, this weekend presents a golden opportunity. They host #1 Alabama in a winner takes all scenario for the first time since 2013. You remember the infamous Kick Six that ruined their rivals dream season while punching themselves a ticket to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta. That was followed by a national championship invitation.

Back then, you may recall the Tigers converted a Hail Mary to upset a great Georgia Bulldog team. Two weekends ago at the loveliest village on the Plains, there was no need for a desperation heave. Auburn totally dominated Georgia. At the time they were first in the College Football Playoff rankings. Narrowly edging out the Crimson Tide.

While there’s zero logic to how the Iron Bowl plays out, it’s not difficult to see the resemblances between 2013 and 2017. The Tigers still pride themselves on their outstanding defense. Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham is evolving into a top quarterback in the country. A reminder to fans of former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall, who made his mark in his first season as the starter.

This trip down memory lane raises a question. Can the 2017 Tigers pull off another upset of their bitter rivals from Tuscaloosa?

On paper, the Crimson Tide have an edge in nearly every statistical category. That includes wins and losses, as they’re undefeated while Auburn has two blemishes. However, the Tigers have been rolling lately. Additionally, they boast Heisman Trophy dark horse Kerryon Johnson and the nation’s best kicker in senior Daniel Carlson. The Tide and Tigers are both missing a few key defensive players. So the better offense likely wins this game.

Will it be Stidham carving up Alabama on his way to carving himself a place in Auburn Tigers lore? Or does Crimson Tide senior Jalen Hurts lead his team to victory? Likely, guaranteeing them a spot in the College Football Playoff. No matter the winner, the 2017 Iron Bowl promises twists, turns and more momentum shifts than a seismic volcano. Buckle up: You’re in for a bumpy ride!
