Duke Blue Devils Basketball: Coach K and his 1,000 School Win

Almost 3 years ago Coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 1,000 game overall. However, on Saturday Night Coach K got win number 1,000 as coach of the Duke Blue Devils.  There are only 2 coaches in the history of the game to win 1,000 games. Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski.  Whats truly amazing is both have done it at 1 school. See Boeheim was the first to get 1,000 wins at the same school. However, Coach K was the first one to get 1,000 wins overall. When you think about how much has to go into you winning 1,000 games figuring that college basketball season is about 30 or so games. There has to be some durability and stability involved.

Coach K took over this Duke program in 1980. When he did the school had no titles and was just an ordinary school. Fast forward to 38 years later and he now has 1,001 career wins at Duke meanwhile the school has 2117 wins as a whole so he as one man is responsible for about half of the school’s all-time wins. In addition, he has added 5 National Titles. His 12 Final Fours ties him for the most of all time.  He has amassed 91 tournament wins. Which is the most of any head coach. Additionally, Coach K has 11 NBA Top 10 picks. This has him tied for most among any coaches. Not to mention he is by far one of the nicest guys you will ever run across in your life.

As a coach, he will go down in history as the greatest college basketball coach of all time. He has the most career wins and his legacy will go down in infamy. Duke has already named the basketball court after him. They have also done the same with the area in which the Cameron crazies hang out before the game.  During his time at Duke, he has placed school squarely on the map as one of the elite. Especially when it comes to college basketball.  I know myself as a fan of the Duke Blue Devils that the day is coming. The sad day when Coach K will no longer be on the sidelines for Duke. It will surely be a teary-eyed night. Nevertheless, when it’s all said and done we will thank Coach K for the amazing memories and the opportunity to witness history.
