CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Football: Latest win has them staring at the playoffs

When the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves looked at their final four games, they knew one thing needed to happen. Win out and they will make the DII Playoffs. After Saturday’s victory over the Dixie State University Trailblazers in Utah, the Pack can smell it. The CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves are just one game away from their feat. How were they able to handle game three of their win streak? Here is a look back.

  1. Defense

The CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves defense has led the way in this three-game winning streak. They have shut down some high-powered offenses along the way. On Saturday, the Pack limited Dixie State to only 168 yards of total offense. The Trailblazers had averaged over 400 yards per game. If the ThunderWolves can continue to play this caliber of defense going into the playoffs, they just might make some noise.

  1. The offense

We stated in our keys that the run game of the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves would need to continue to carry the offense. However, on Saturday, the Pack was well-balanced. Overall, their 331 yards of offense came on 184 yards passing along with 147 yards rushing. All in all, maintaining balance helps keep the opposing defenses on their toes. The ThunderWolves will definitely need a balanced attack as they enter the tournament.

  1. Darius Williams

Williams is leading the defense of the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves. In fact, he has 8 INTs on the season. Not to mention that the junior cornerback is sitting in the top spot for the most INTs in DII. Moreover, he has a knack for the end zone. Specifically, he has taken 3 of his 8 INTs back to the house for TDs. With this in mind, Williams is becoming what many perceive as a shutdown corner. Thus, if he continues on this pace, he may just find himself playing on Sundays.

The playoffs are surely insight for the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves. A win in the final game on Saturday should all but guarantee them a spot in the field.

After their victory over Dixie State, the Pack moved up to 20th in the D2Football.com poll and 23rd in AFCA Coaches Poll.

Next up for CSU-Pueblo is a trip to Nebraska to take on the Chadron State College Eagles. Kickoff is at high noon MST on Saturday, November 11.
