CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Football: Three Keys against Dixie State
When the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves took the field 2 weeks ago, they did so needing to win their last four games to make the DII Playoffs. After two weeks of outstanding play, they are halfway there. This week the Pack faces the Dixie State University TrailBlazers. Can the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves continue their winning ways this week? Here are the three keys to doing so.
During the current two-game win streak, the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves have played outstanding defense. They have allowed only seven points in the two contests. Their two opponents combined have totaled 206 yards in total offense. The defense has also scored three times.
The Pack will need that defense again this week. The TrailBlazers are 54th in total offense. They average 406 yards per game. The Pack will need another top of their game performance this week to keep their current streak and playoff hopes alive.
- Running Game
Last week the Pack rushed for a total of 151 yards on 35 carries. They pretty controlled this game in this capacity. Marché Dennard once again led the way with 115 yards. He did this only on 12 carries. Since becoming the starting running back, Dennard has done nothing but impress. He has 825 yards on the season to go along with 13 TDs.
Dennard and the CSU-Pueblo rushing attack could be in for another big game this week. The run defense of Dixie State currently sits 146 in DII. They give up an average of 224 YPG on the ground. If the Pack stay true to form, Dennard and company could be a happy group.
Who will it be this week? Onetime starter Brandon Edwards returned last week from injury. He went 6-11 for 53 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT in relief of Rex Dausin. Does this mean that the Edwards is once again the starter? Will Dausin keep his starting job?
Dausin probably played his best game since taking over for the injured Edwards last week against WSU. He was 13-18 for 166 yards and 2 TDs. This game was out of hand early so that may have limited the passing game. The CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves were in control the entire way. We will have to see how Coach Wristen deploys his quarterbacks this week.
This week and next week are the last two regular-season games for the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves. However, both games are on the road. They need to have strong showings and victories in both to make the DII tournament. The Pack is currently ranked 21st in D2Football.com and 24th in AFCA Coaches polls. It starts Saturday at Dixie State.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is at 1 PM MST. It will take place at Legend Solar Stadium in St. George, Utah.
