2017 Breeders Cup: Longines Distaff Predictions

The final race of the Friday Breeders Cup races is the Longines Distaff race. It is for Three-Year-Olds and up for fillies and mares, run at a mile and an eighth on the dirt. Smallest field of all the Breeders Cup races with 8 runners going.  The term distaff comes from the weight for age scale. It is another way to keep the races equal among other horses. Prior to 2012 and after 2008 it was the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic. The 2008 race was won by one of the best female horses of all time Zenyatta. In 2011 and 2012 Royal Delta won back to back years.

Here is the field for the 2017 Longines Distaff as they run for a $2,000,000 purse.

  1. Champagne Room: Ridden by Mario Gutierrez 15-1
  2. Stellar Wind: Ridden by Victor Espinoza 5-2
  3. Mopotism: Ridden by Lanfranco Dettori 30-1
  4. Abel Talsman: Ridden by Mike Smith 4-1
  5. Elate: Ridden by Jose Ortiz 3-1
  6. Forever Unbridled: Ridden by John Velaquez 4-1
  7. Paradise Woods: Ridden by Flavien Prat 9-2
  8. Romantic Vision: Ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr 15-1

Summary

Champagne Room had a sharp comeback and has worked out super after said win. Worked well in Delmar during the Summer could definitely factor in the outcome.

Stellar Wind one of the top horses in this race, 3 for 3 in Grade 1s in 2017 biggest issue is the 97-day layoff. Will be up near the pace in a stalking position.

Mopotism has a couple of 2nd place finishes in Grade 2 races hard to bet on him.

Abel Talsman winner of the 2017 Kentucky Oaks is in fine form and is a top contender.

Elate is peaking at the right time excellent training, a pair of Grade 1 wins and the trainer of this horse has won this race 5 times.

Forever Unbridled has won 7 races at 7 different tracks finished this race third last year the negative is he’s coming off a 73-day layoff.

Paradise Woods will likely be the pacesetter and will try to go wire to wire, had super training at Del Mar in the summer. Good Looking horse if it can hold the lead.

Romantic Vision 5-year-old horse whose career is winding down can Brian Hernandez Jr ride him off into the sunset?
