USMNT is an utter disappointment
For a country that was building on success with Jurgen Klinsmann, this is the new low for the USMNT as for the first time since 1986, they have failed to qualify for the World Cup. For many, this is no big deal because soccer is not big in the good old United States but this team had started to build a bigger following. Especially after the 2014 World Cup where they advanced out of the so-called “group of death” with teams like Germany, Portugal, Ghana and the US. Remembering that only 2 of those teams can advance on to the knockout round and for the US, being one of the 2 was a huge accomplishment and showed great signs of improvement.
Fast forward to US Soccer firing/asking Klinsmann to leave, bringing back Bruce Arena and putting him in charge. Here we are a day after and we are wondering what went wrong with this team? What would make them drop a 2-1 game against Trinidad and Tobago? The answer lies in the lack of talent that their roster has. Previously, the US was able to get by with the lack of talent because of Howard their keeper, but he is now older and not able to carry the team as in the past.
So what does the USMNT need to do not to make sure they qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Well, it starts with a major overhaul in my opinion. Including moving on from Bruce Arena. This is my opinion only and not saying they will but I believe someone needs to take the heat for this and it starts up top with his choice for the US National Team. Beyond that, they need to bring the players that will give them the best chance to regroup and let the team start building chemistry now together. This is a very bad setback for the US but they can fix it. However, as I stated it needs to start with the man up top and that is Bruce Arena.
Update: There is a bit of controversy with the goal that leveled the Panama vs Costa Rica game which ultimately coupled with the US loss knocked them out of the World Cup. There was a goal credited to Panama that was a “Phantom Goal” that leveled the game that Panama would eventually go on to win. You can see the goal here and what the recourse of the US is at this point.
