Los Angeles Rams: The Best of the NFL West
When the Los Angeles Rams began the 2017-18 season, improvement was the word that many in the organization strongly used. New Head Coach, Sean McVay, and his staff only wanted to see improvement throughout the season. Improvement is definitely, what they have. They have improved to the point to where they look to be the best team in the NFL West. Yes, you read that right. Here is a look at the improvements that they have made.
The offense of the Los Angeles Rams has drastically improved. They are fifth in the league in total offense. That is a vast improvement from the 32nd ranking that they finished the 2016 season with. Why this drastic change? There are several reasons for this jump.
- Jared Goff
Goff is currently the 8th rated QB in the league when it comes to total yards, 1,072. He is above QBs like Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford, Ben Roethlisberger, and others. He has 7 TDs to 1 INT on the season. He is 10th in the league in yards per game with 268. This improvement had led the Rams to a 3-1 record. It is also making the Rams look very good with their decision in making Goff the number one overall pick in 2016.
- Sean McVay
The youngest head coach in the NFL is making a big impact on, not only the Los Angeles Rams but the league as well. His offensive innovations are putting the Rams in winning situations. He is a big reason for the improvements of Jared Goff. McVay is using Tavon Austin in ways that he should be used, not just as a wide receiver. Sean McVay brings a youthfulness to the team that allows them to play with freedom and excitement.
- Wade Phillips
Phillips is a key cog to the Los Angeles Rams success. We all know that the Rams have a very formidable defense. Now, under the direction of Wade Phillips, the Rams defense is becoming scary. They are currently just outside the top 5, sitting 6th in the league. Their only downfall may be their size up front. Teams with bigger offensive lines can push them around a little bit more than they would like. However, Wade Phillips will make those adjustments and turn that front around as the season goes one.
- The Front Office
General Manager Les Snead and VP of Football Operations, Kevin Demoff have made a huge turn in making the Rams a success. They used the 2017 NFL Draft to obtain weapons for Sean McVay’s offense. They traded for others like TE Derek Carrier and WR Sammy Watkins. They used free agency to pick up key offensive linemen like C John Sullivan and LT Andrew Whitworth. All of these moves and the use of the salary cap are making the Rams a viable organization once again.
The Los Angeles Rams are young, vibrant and strong. They will have key pieces in places that they did not before. I have only mentioned a few. This week will be a key week in the direction of the season. At this point, however, I feel that the Rams are the best team in the NFC West. They are staring down the barrel of the playoffs.
