Champions League Week 2 Recap
First off, I just want to say that I love the Champions League, and you’ll see why in my Champions League Week 2 recap. It is one of my favorite tournaments to watch when it comes to soccer. The tournament includes the best clubs throughout Europe which makes for some entertaining matchups. The games take place midweek, so it can be a great reason to take a long lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Going forward, I will be looking at the top stories coming out of the group matches, so let’s start with the second round of the group stage that took place over the last two days.
English clubs had a great midweek performance.
It started Tuesday with wins by Tottenham and Manchester City, which give both squads 6 out of 6 points in the group stage. Harry Kane continued his hot streak and led the Spurs with a hat trick. Manchester City struggled to put away Shakhtar, until a 90th minute goal from Raheem Sterling gave the Citizens room to breathe in a 2-0 win. Wednesday brought victory for Manchester United and Chelsea. United traveled to a chilly Moscow and got a brace from Romelu Lukaku in their convincing 3-0 win. Chelsea needed every second of their match, as it was a 93rd minute goal that secured their 3 points in a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
German clubs did not have a great midweek performance.
It was a rough week for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Bayern found themselves down 2 minutes in and could not recover as they were handed a 3-0 defeat a very good Paris Saint-Germain squad. Dortmund started with a tough loss against Spurs, and then found themselves facing the defending champion Real Madrid. Madrid proved to be too much, and Dortmund failed to get a point in their first two matches as they fell 3-1.
Real Madrid is still very good, and that is bad for everyone else.
Real Madrid are the two time defending champions and look primed for that third one. In their first two matches they have scored 6 goals and are perfect in this years Group of Death. They started this Champions League campaign with a Super Cup win over Manchester United, and continue to impress in European play. Their next matchup is a very tough one against Tottenham. If Madrid can find victory against Spurs they will all but secure their spot in the knockout stage. If they continue to get scoring from Gareth Bale and Ronaldo they are going to be a very scary team.
The next stage of games will take place October 17th and 18th. Can’t wait to see what the next round brings us!
