Akron Zips: Four Keys For Victory Over Bowling Green
The Akron Zips go into their matchup against Bowling Green with a record of 1-3. It’s a pivotal game for the Zips, as they look to rebound from losses against Iowa State and Troy. It’s also imperative Akron go 1-0 in Conference play. The Falcons, who sit with a record of 0-4, are one of the MAC’s most disappointing teams, but won’t be a pushover for Akron. What do the Zips need to do in order to walk out of Bowling Green with a victory?
1. Austin Wolf
Wolf was absent from the Zips first three games. He returned during Akron’s loss against Troy last week. The Senior caught 6 passes for 71 yards in his first in-game action of the season. Bowling Green isn’t very effective against the pass, giving up 305 yards per game and 8 TD’s. It’s the perfect opportunity for Wolf to lead the Zips to a victory.
2. Establish running game
Not only does Warren Ball need to come up big on the ground, so does the entire Akron rushing attack. The Falcons give up 243.8 rushing yards a game. That’s mind-boggling. With a rusher like Ball on the roster, the Zips have no excuse to not use him a lot during the matchup.
3. Pressure Jarret Doege
After assuming the starting role last week against Middle Tennessee State, Doege is the lead dog for the Falcons. The true Freshman had 283 yards and TD. And while those are modest numbers, to say the least, he’s probably going to be taken off his game if the Zips can apply pressure. On the off chance Bowling Green goes with Sophomore, James Morgan, the same philosophy applies. Both are quite inexperienced and can be beaten and make mistakes when rattled.
4. Don’t look ahead
While the Akron Zips are 1-3, they’ve definitely got the feel of the favorites in this game. They can’t allow themselves to look past Bowling Green. If Akron gets ahead it’s imperative they don’t take their foot off the gas. The game is 60 minutes. All focus must be spent on the Falcons.
Akron should get the victory on Saturday. It would be a nice start to MAC Conference play with a win. The Zips have a long road ahead of them, but one game at a time will get them to the promised land of the MAC.[DanielTwitter]
