2018 NBA Draft: Luka Doncic Will Make History As The First Pick
The 2017-18 NBA season has yet to start and already we’ve got draft fever. Many believe Michael Porter Jr will be the first pick, but there’s another name that has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. Luka Doncic might be the first European prospect to go number 1 in the NBA Draft. The 6’8 forward just won a gold medal at the Eurobasket Tournament and was a major factor in that result. He’s quite possibly the best European prospect ever, even better than Darko Milicic.
Many will be cautious about Doncic, especially since he’s one of the unknown European prospects, similar to that of the aforementioned Milicic or Kristaps Porzingis. It’s hard to get a read on Doncic. Is he really the best European player to enter the NBA, or is he just another bust?
If the Eurobasket was any indication, Doncic is going to be a star in the NBA. Playing alongside Goran Dragic, the 18-year-old put up 14.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. He was a key in Slovenia’s Gold Medal run.
Doncic is a very capable perimeter player. He’s comfortable shooting the three ball and can handle the ball as well. In addition, Doncic is a more than capable passer. He averaged 4.2 for Real Madrid in the Euroleague last season.
As mentioned before, Doncic is a man of mystery. We’ve seen players average these type of numbers overseas before. However, to do it on a stage like the Eurobasket Tournament against NBA-level competition is nothing to joke about. That’s what has got the NBA scouts buzzing.
Mike Schmitz wrote an outstanding article on Luka Doncic for ESPN. There’s a quote in the article that really sums up the type of player Doncic can be. The following was taken from Schmitz’s article.
“In this moment I told someone who he reminded me of a young Drazen Petrovic,” said longtime Olimpija basketball chief Srecko Bester.
If Doncic is drawing comparisons to the best European player outside of Dirk Nowitzki that’s quite the praise. He’s all you could ask for in an NBA prospect. The talent level is sky-high. Doncic is definitely deserving of the number 1 pick in 2018.Follow @DGentleman9288
