Alabama Crimson Tide Basketball: Collin Sexton and the Tide Seek SEC Title

The Alabama Crimson Tide is known for its football program. That might not be the case much longer, as the basketball team looks towards the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach, Avery Johnson, has given Alabama a chance at a top-25 ranking. It also doesn’t hurt that they’ve got guaranteed top-5 NBA Draft pick, Collin Sexton.

The Crimson Tide backcourt might be one of the best units in the Nation. Sexton, a 6’3 guard from Georgia, is looking to be a one and done player for the Tide this season. His stock surged during the postseason tournaments, such as the McDonald’s All-American Game, where he won the Dunk Contest and the Marines 3-point shootout.

Sexton is the highest rated recruit at Alabama in years and should lead the Crimson Tide in scoring. He wasn’t chosen as the MVP of the FIBA U17 World Championship for nothing.

Yet, Sexton won’t be alone in the Alabama backcourt, as he’s got another talented playmaker alongside him, adding to the scoring and punch he’ll bring to the table.

John Petty is a freshman guard from Huntsville. The 6-5 guard will play mostly as a backup SG but might pair up with Sexton at times. He would be the Crimson Tide’s marquee recruit had it not been for Saxton.

Aside from the backcourt, Alabama has a very strong frontcourt as well. Ohio State transfer, Daniel Giddens, a former top-50 recruit, will add scoring and rebounding to the Crimson Tide. Also, Donta Hall is a blocked shot specialist, contributing 48 a season ago.

In addition, Braxton Key, Alabama’s leading rebounder, and scorer last season is looking to cement his status as an NBA lottery pick. He flirted with the idea of declaring last season but opted not to. It was a smart decision, as his presence will make Alabama an intimidating team for any opponent.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will need everything they can get out of Sexton, Petty, Key, and the frontcourt. The SEC is the most competitive it’s been in years. Kentucky brings back another top recruiting class. Missouri adds the Nation’s top recruit in Michael Porter Jr. Florida has added two impact transfers, Egor Koulechov and Jalen Hudson, to go along with KeVaughn Allen. Simply put, the SEC is loaded this season.

It’s not farfetched to consider Alabama a top-25 team. Just Sexton alone will be enough to guide them into the NCAA Tournament. Avery Johnson has done an outstanding job putting together a winner at Alabama.
