Akron Zips Football: Four Keys For Victory Over Iowa State
The Akron Zips are set to face the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday. It’s a pivotal matchup for Akron, as they look to pull the upset and take their record to 2-1. However, facing a school from the Big 12 is no easy task. Akron will need to play a perfect game to defeat the Cyclones. What are the keys to a Zips victory?
1. Warren Ball must establish himself early
A non-factor against Penn State, Ball needs to come out of the gate strong against Iowa State. ISU hasn’t been the picture of consistency stopping the run this season. They allowed 118 rushing yards to Akrum Wadley of Iowa last week. This is the perfect game for Ball to take advantage.
2. Akron must slow down the Iowa State passing offense
The Cyclones have scored 83 points during their first two games. The WR duo of Allen Lazard and Hakeem Butler will prove to be the toughest test to the Zips secondary this season. Cyclones quarterback, Jacob Park, is much more of a gunslinger than Penn State QB, Trace McSorley, so the Akron defensive backs must be at the top of their game.
3. Don’t let the rushing attack of Iowa State beat you
Saquon Barkley manhandled the Zips during the team’s 56-0 win two weeks ago. While controlling the passing attack of Park is key, Akron can’t lose sight of RB, David Montgomery.
On the season the Sophomore has 199 yards. He’s coming off a 112 yard 1 touchdown performance against Iowa. If Akron can’t clean up the rush defense, it’s going to be a long afternoon.
4. Use the win against Arkansas- Pine Bluff as a confidence booster
While not a marquee win for Akron, winning a game by a score of 52-3 is a huge step in the right direction. The Akron Zips were able to put the awful loss against Penn State behind them and dominate Arkansas-Pine Bluff from the opening kickoff. Iowa State is without question a bigger test, but keeping the momentum of last week’s win will be essential in pulling the upset.
