Orlando City SC: Gains Three Points in Meaningless Game

As Orlando City SC was able to escape to DC United and play in RFK Stadium to avoid Hurricane Irma, they were able to give the few fans able to watch the game something to celebrate for. Orlando is currently ranked 10th in East MLS Playoff Standings, and was facing D.C. United who is the 11th ranked team.

Despite most fans were prepping for the Irma in Florida, Orlando took the field and prepped themselves to attempt a final run at the playoffs this season. Jason Kreis got his team ready and started with the following lineup:

The Lions know that their playoff chances are potentially over, but still, want to finish the season strong and hope for other teams to start losing out. With the opening match whistle being blown, Orlando started the strike early and fast, yet was unable to score right away. DC United attempted a few counter attack goals but was unable to execute.

Then, Cyle Larin was able to beat the defense and put one past the goalie for a goal to make it 1-0 at the 19th minute. With this goal, Cyle Larin is now the all-time leading scorer for Orlando City Soccer Club.

Yet the scoring did not stop there when Giles Barnes doubled the score and put the Lions up 2-0 at the 28th minute with a cross and bad clearing from D.C. The game went scoreless for the rest of the half, and Orlando went into the locker room up 2-0.

After heading out of the locker room after halftime, Orlando looked to maintain the lead and not give up the potential three points they typically are used to doing. With that being said, Orlando continued to play defensive and ensure not giving up the lead against DC United.

Orlando City’s Servando Carrasco received his second yellow card, which ejected him from this match, Orlando was unable to hold onto the shutout and end the game with a 2-1 victory at RFK Stadium, with Kofi Opare scoring in the 89th Minute. The win could bring them closer in the playoff rankings.

However, it is still a long shot for them to obtain their first MLS playoff berth. Orlando will travel to Atlanta to take on Atlanta FC in an attempt to build on their current winning streak.
