CFB Preview: Howard vs. Kent State
Saturday, September 9th the Kent State Golden Flashes look to have a huge bounce back after being blown out by the defending National Champions, the Clemson Tigers. The Golden Flashes will be hosting the Howard Bison who started off the season 1-0 after pulling off the biggest upset in College Football. Okay, so they didn’t shutout Alabama or anything like that, but the betting odds were heavily in favor of UNLV until Howard won that is.
The Golden Flashes didn’t do much in terms of offense in their week one loss Nick Hodley the starting quarterback stats were abysmal completing just one pass for a single yard, however, his legs were the biggest part of the offense that day rushing for 53 yards on 10 carries. He’ll be a huge part of the offense going forward and needs to step up this week against Howard if they want to win this game.
As for Howard watch out for the explosive dual threat quarterback Caylin Newton. Newton threw for 140 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while also running for 190 yards, and two touchdowns. He did it all in the week one matchup against UNLV. However don’t think that just because he had a big game on the ground the running game is weak senior running back Anthony Philyaw had a big game too adding 71 yards on 20 carries, and two touchdowns. Philyaw was selected as preseason MEAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Howard comes into this matchup with all the momentum, however, can the home crowd get KSU into the game? The first matchup between schools will definitely be a big one but how will it go? Kent State is currently favored to win but with the explosiveness, the Bisons bring on offense don’t be too surprised if Howard wins this one as well.
