CFB Preview: Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. Akron Zips
Saturday, September 9th, will be the Akron Zips first home game of the season. They will be hosting the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at 6:30. In what’s shaping up to be a good game. The Zips come into the weekend with a 0-1 record after being dismantled by the 6th ranked Nittany Lions. A game in which Akron never really got anything going for them.
Saturday could be a different story for quarterback Thomas Woodson, who looks to be more effective through the air after only posting 71 yards in the week one loss, and he certainly needs to be if Akron wants to be competitive. However, my eyes will be on Ohio State transfer running back Warren Ball who only posted 27 yards last week but will be the featured back all season.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff comes into Saturday sporting a 1-0 record after knocking off the Morehouse Tigers week one. My player to watch for the Golden Lions is the 5-10 junior running back KeShawn Williams who had a big day on the ground week one rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and caught two passes for 20 yards. Look for the Golden Lions to continue to use his versatility out of the backfield this week.
While the Zips had a rough first week against a tough opponent (like most MAC schools did) I fully anticipate a bounce back game from them this week. If Woodson can be more effective through the air, and Ball proves he can be a reliable number one running threat the season could end better than the Akron faithful are hoping for. That being said, Arkansas-Pine Bluff isn’t a team to sleep on, in this first matchup between schools. Don’t be surprised to see the Golden Lions come out hot and carry the momentum from their week one win into this weekend against Arkon.
