Denver Broncos: Defensive Preview – Still the best in the West
The defense of the Denver Broncos is a perennial top 5. 2016 was an off year, in their terms, and they still finished fourth. What can they do in 2017 to improve on that ranking? How will new Defensive Coordinator Joe Woods and Head Coach Vance Joseph deploy players? We will all get answers to that soon enough. Here is a look at the 2017 Denver Broncos defense.
The run defense of the Denver Broncos was awful in 2016. The fourth-ranked defense overall in the league finished as the 28th ranked rush defense. How do you fix that? You bring in the 6’3” 325lb Domata Pecko from the Cincinnati Bengals. Peko may not be a big name but he is a viable run stopper. His big frame will open it up for middle linebacker Brandon Marshall to control the opposing run game. This addition should help improve on the 28th ranked rush defense.
We all already know about the pass defense of the Denver Broncos. Even without DeMarcus Ware on the field for a majority of 2016, the Broncos finished as the number one ranked pass defense in the league. That is because of the outstanding pass rush that they employ. Von Miller, Shane Ray, and Derek Wolfe are all outstanding pass rushers. Now you add a player like second-round pick DeMarcus Walker to the Frey and the Broncos just got better. Opposing offensive linemen are going to have trouble trying to decide who to block. The Denver Broncos pass rush could be very entertaining in 2017.
In order to have the number one ranked pass defense, you not only have to have an outstanding pass rush but a shut down secondary as well. That is something that the Denver Broncos bring to the table. Cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. control the outsides again in 2017. While Safeties TJ Ward and Darian Stewart patrol the middle. You throw in nickel corner Bradley Roby and your offense better hope one of them falls down. This is probably the best secondary in the league. It should stay that way again in 2017.
With the young offense that is leading the Denver Broncos, there are bound to be mistakes. That is why it is a must that they employ such an outstanding defense. The Denver defense will once again be a top 5 defense in the league. However, will it be enough to correlate to wins in 2017?
