Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Defensive Preview – Wide Open Secondary
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have one of the most prolific offenses this upcoming season. However, their defense could be one of the most underrated in the entire NFL. They have a solid nucleus of players who are capable of being “the guy” in the big situations and have added young depth through the draft. Gerald McCoy is the mainstay on this defense and has been for years now. He anchors the defensive front and could be considered one of the best defensive tackles in the game. He along with Robert Ayers, William Gholston, and young gun Noah Spence may prove to be one of the best defensive lines in football this season.
Along with that front line, the linebacking corps is solid and looks to continue to improve. In fact, I believe Lavonte David is the most underrated linebackers in the league with what he does for this team. You add Kwon Alexander to David and your linebackers are playmakers. The only question circling around the backers is Alexander’s previous suspension for PED use. If that truly is behind him at this point you have two All-Pro linebackers.
The secondary may be the weakest point on this team but with Vernon Hargreaves only entering his second season in the NFL, the sky’s the limit. The secondary is anchored by long time veteran Brent Grimes who has been somewhat of a cancer in other locker rooms. We probably won’t know who is the every down free safety until training camp as I’m sure rookie Justin Evans will make a push to start over second-year man Ryan Smith who played the cornerback position last season.
Overall the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be the most intriguing team this season. They could win ten to twelve games or lose just as many on the flip side. With the defense Dirk Koetter has at his disposal I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team make the playoffs not only this season but for years to come. The Buc’s are finally back and will be back with a bang.
