The quarterback situation in Jacksonville is so bad… “how bad is it?”
The Jags and their coaching staff have been forced to settle with Bortles as their starting signal caller.
After allowing veteran quarterback Chad Henne to start the team’s last preseason game, Marrone has gone ahead and given the reins back to Bortles for the club’s first game that counts.
Anyone who has been paying attention to the goings-on of this offseason have heard all of the talk about Bortles struggling mightily, whether it be throwing five interceptions in a single practice or missing wide-open targets during the team’s preseason tilts.
The former No. 3 overall draft selection of the Jags has been less than impressive since entering the league, posting 51 interceptions over his three-year career.
Though the offensive line has never been anything to write home about during his tenure with Jacksonville, Bortles has had some solid playmakers at the wide-receiver position in Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns.
The organization also provided the 25-year-old quarterback with a stud running back in the first round of the 2017 draft, former LSU ball carrier Leonard Fournette. The bruising runner will be the featured runner in a backfield that also has former Alabama product T.J. Yeldon.
All-in-all, the Jags’ hand may be forced to start Bortles because they don’t have a better option on their roster.
That being said, I know of a guy who is a free-agent quarterback who would be an immediate upgrade over Bortles, but I’ll go ahead and take a knee on that subject for the time being.
