Marvin Bagley Makes Duke University The Favorite In March
It’s safe to say that Duke University will be the No. 1 team when the A.P. Preseason College Basketball poll is released. As if their 2017 recruiting class wasn’t strong enough, the addition of potential top-three NBA Draft pick, Marvin Bagley solidified themselves as a National Title threat.
Originally, Bagley was slated to be a part of the 2018 class, but, after reclassifying to 2017, the Nation’s top player is now a member of the Blue Devils. Not only is this a major move for Duke, it’s a major move for the rest of the country as this spells doom for the other top-25 teams.
Not only does Duke feature returning players such as Grayson Allen and Marques Bolden, the Blue Devils have four top-20 recruits. Including Bagley, the team features Gary Trent Jr., Trevon Duvall, and Wendell Carter. It’s an onslaught of talent in Durham, NC this season.
All the addition of Bagley will do is increase the chances of a Duke National Title. We already know that Allen is a Player of the Year candidate. While some will say he’s immature, his play still leads the Blue Devils. He’s the heart and soul of the roster.
Bolden was a disappointment during his Freshman year due to injury. Now healthy, he can show why he was such a valued recruit for Duke in the 2016 class. If Bolden can play significant minutes for Duke, they could have one of the countries best big men.
As for the point guard, Duval might be the best at the school since Tyus Jones. The top-ranked PG in the 2017 class, he’s arguably the most talented player on the Blue Devils. His leadership on the court will be essential to any March run.
In addition, there’s Gary Trent Jr. and Carter, who will pace the team at the forward positions. While these position battles aren’t as set in stone as some of the other spots on the roster, both can step out and hit the three, similar to Luke Kennard or Ryan Kelly.
With just these talents alone, Duke is primed for a big tourney run. The addition of Bagley made the Blue Devis a more dominant force than they already were. Teams should be worried about Duke and their impressive roster. It could be the best we’ve seen in quite some time.
