Toledo Football: A Pair Of Wide Receivers Will Be The X-factor This Season
The Toledo Rockets look poised to control the MAC Conference this season. With QB Logan Woodside under center, there is a lot of hype going into the season. Also, returning are two All-MAC WR’s in Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson. And it’s these two who will make the Rockets a true powerhouse.
A lot of a team’s success hinges on the play of the quarterback. That’s true with Toledo, as Woodside will be considered an NFL prospect by years end. Although a QB is sometimes only as good as the talent around him, and thankfully Thompson and Johnson are more than capable of holding their own.
Last season, Thompson and Johnson were a huge factor in Toledo’s 10th ranked passing attack that averaged 322 yards per game. The duo combined for 104 receptions and 21 touchdowns. With last year’s reception leader, Corey Jones, graduating, it’s going to be Johnson who will look to increase his 40 receptions total from last year, and Thompson who might take the next step forward.
All of the weapons on offense will make Toledo a force in the MAC this season. With nobody looking poised to challenge the Rockets, they could very well be the Western Michigan of a year ago. And as we saw with Western Michigan, a WR can make a huge difference for a roster. Do either Thompson or Johnson have what it takes to put up stats like 1st round NFL Draft pick, Corey Davis?
Say what you want about the MAC Conference, but teams always seem to make news across the Nation. Toledo has the skill position players to make headlines across the NCAA. Cody Thompson might very well be a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the Nation’s best WR. Last season, Toledo had two players top 60+ receptions, and there’s no reason why that can’t happen again this year.
Watch out for Toledo this year. They’ve got all the offensive firepower to keep up with the high-powered offenses in the Nation. If they can get remain undefeated thought a week 4 matchup with Miami, don’t be surprised if they crack the A.P. Top 25. It’s going to hinge on the play of the WR core, and that’s going to take the Rockets a long way.
