Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins are not just friends

“Have you ever met a girl that you tried to date, but a year to make love she wanted you to wait,” are famous words by rapper Biz Markie. The same could be said about the Washington Redskins and their QB Kirk Cousins. Last year Cousins had a breakout second half of the season, but the Redskins wanted to wait until after the 2016 season to sign him to a long-term deal. Now the time has come for the Redskins and Kirk Cousins to make love.

GM Scot McCloughan has said that he would not break the bank for one player in order for his team to be successful. However, in this day and age in the NFL you need a QB to be a winner. The Redskins have gone through many QBs in over the last 2 decades. They finally have one that can lead them to the promise land. You have got to find a way to make this guy, Kirk Cousins, a permanent fixture of your franchise going forward.

Over the last 2 seasons, Kirk Cousins had rewritten the franchise record book for the Washington Redskins. He holds the single-season record for the passing yards (4166 – 2015), 400-yard passing games (3 – 2016), 300-yard passing games (18 – 2016), completions (379 – 2015), attempts (543-2015), and many others. He is still continuing to do this in 2016.

He is also proven himself as a leader in the clubhouse. Last season, after the “You Like That” game, Cousins was viewed as a respected individual. One who was finally getting his due? The Washington Redskins will be well over $50 million in cap space in 2017. Money should not be an issue when it comes to the best franchise QB that this team has seen since Mark Rypien.

The Redskins could opt to franchise tag Cousins again in 2017 and 2018. A combined tag would cost the Redskins nearly $60 million over the next years. While the tag in 2017 is a modest $24 million, the tag amount for 2018 goes up over $35 million. The Washington Redskins would do themselves justice is signing Cousins long-term after the 2016 season.

Kirk Cousins, “You, you got what we need!” Leadership, ability, toughness, and accuracy are all the intangibles. There are many teams that would love to have you as their QB. I just hope that you and the Washington Redskins are not just friends! Always HTTR!!!!!
