Entertainment: Could Spider-Man Be Featured In The Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Spider-Man is one of the world’s most well-known comic book characters. He is idolized by young kids, and immortalized by the older generation. However, is it possible that Spider-Man is starting to lose his mass appeal?
The Spider-Man movie franchise has been a catalyst in bringing the superhero into the forefront of the comic book film revolution, but the most recent Spidey flicks have failed to impress at the box office.
Sony’s box office totals for the Amazing Spider-Man series have been far from positive. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was only able to draw approximately $203 million, while that number seems like a fair amount, consider the budget for the film was estimated at $200 million. The sequel actually preformed worse than the original, as the Amazing Spider-Man was able to draw $262 million.
There are not many options left for Sony. After starting over due to the disaster that was Spider-Man 3, the company focused its attention on The Amazing Spider-Man storyline, but that has proven to be unsuccessful. If the studio does indeed go through another re-boot, than it could further damage the credibility of the series.
So, what is Sony to do? How can they keep their current Spider Man world intact? While the answer might be a tough pill to swallow for the studio, they might need to look towards Marvel, and by Marvel I mean Disney and it’s Cinematic Universe for help.
While this may seem like a pipe dream, there have been rumblings over the past few days of a potential Spider Man inclusion into the MCU. A recent article on Hitflix detailed the possible plans for Spidey.
“I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds”
Sony’s best option is to play ball with Disney, and by doing so they might be able to jumpstart this once-proud franchise. If Spider-Man can be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, than the franchise can be linked with uber-successful Marvel films such as Captain America, Iron Man, and Guardians of The Galaxy.
Fans jaws dropped during The Avengers, as they have never seen so many superheroes together on the screen at one time, but could you imagine Spider-Man teaming with them?
It is certainly something many fans have hoped for since the onset of the MCU. With the current rumor that Marvel is looking to do something big—possibly the massive Civil War storyline—the addition of Peter Parker into the Cinematic Universe would greatly increase ticket sales for Disney’s films, but could also do the same for Sony
It wont be easy for Sony to give up the rights to Spider-Man, but they have almost no choice in the matter. If there is a chance that by including him in the MCU might garner more interest in their own Spider-Man world, than the studio might need to pull the trigger.
Sony has a few projects in the works based on the web-slinger including Sinister Six, which the company is currently using as a soft re-boot of the franchise and Amazing Spider-Man 3.
While a deal with Disney might prevent them from seeing all the profits associated with future films, a partnership with them will greatly increase the value of Spider-Man and other projects associated with his likeness
